Essay from the catalogue for THE LEGACY LIVES: A Celebration of the World at its Most Beautiful and Man and Woman at Their Best, an art exhibit that premiered at Lever House at Park Avenue and 53rd Street in New York City on September 23, 1996 and became the  centerpiece for the Conference for Constructive Alternatives symposium at Hillsdale College in November 1997.

Speech given during Hillsdale College’s Conference for Constructive Alternatives “Art and the Moral Imagination” symposium, Hillsdale, Michigan,  November 1997; reprinted in Vital Speeches of the Day, February 15, 1998, in ART Ideas in two parts: Volume 4, Numbers 3 and 4 (Winter and Spring) 1998 and in Imprimus, June 1998. It was later delivered by Ms. York at a conference in Oklahoma City sponsored by the Foundation for Academic Excellence, October 1999 and at Common Ground Parent Association of the Princeton Area of Independent Schools in November of the same year.
